What You Know About Juneteenth?

Many of the fine members of the Afrospear and Afrosphere are blogging to raise the awareness of the Juneteenth celebration. I must admit, I;m not much of a celebration kind of guy. I don't celebrate any holidays, even though I make each and every cookout, as anything other than a convenient day to reconnect with family and friends. I have my reasons. However, my compatriots are to be lauded for their efforts to offer education a sorely mis-educated society.

Please do these blogger the honor of visiting their sites and reading about Juneteenth. The clip is from what appears to be the official Juneteenth website.

Juneteenth is the oldest
nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in
the United States.

From
its Galveston, Texas origin in 1865, the observance of June 19th as the African
American Emancipation Day has spread across the United States and beyond.

Today
Juneteenth commemorates
African American freedom and emphasizes education and achievement. It is a day, a week,
and in some areas a month marked with celebrations, guest speakers, picnics and family
gatherings.

The Truth About Obama

I really dislike politics. I think Democrats and Republicans are two sides of the same busted coin. I can't in good conscience support such nonsense.

But I like what Barak is doing here. Got to be proactive in this day and age of instant information access, where a rumor can get wings and cross the oceans in an instant. If somebody is going t lie on you, you best have the truthful information readily available.

So even though I can't support Barak because he is a Democrat, and I simply can't, no matter how much I might hope and wish and pray that maybe this time will be different, I just can't support this foolishness, I will do my part to help him get his truthful information out there in the face of the smears that have already begun.

LIE: Rush Limbaugh says a tape exists of Michelle Obama using the word “whitey” from the pulpit of Trinity United

LIE: Blogger Larry Johnson writes “New and dramatic developments. This is a heads up. I'll post the news Monday morning by 0900 hours.”

LIE: Proven GOP sleazemeister Roger Stone says he has “credible evidence that some indelible record exists” of a tape of Michelle Obama using the term “whitey.”

LIE: Blogger: “Tape was filmed between June 26th - July 1st 2004 in Chicago, IL at the Rainbow/PUSH Coalition Conference at Trinity United Church: specifically the Women's Event.”

Robber Barons Strike Again, Local News Focused On Blue Jeans Bandits

The headline story in the local Atlanta newspaper is a group of poor people who were apprehended after a massive investigation into a series of thefts of designer clothes.

Meanwhile, the Robber Barons of old are back and more gangster than ever before. On one of the back pages we find a small discussion of why something that cost $2 not too long ago, costs over $4 today. Does it cost more to make it? Not really. Are we out of it? Probably not any time soon. Did everyone working in the industry get a raise? Nope; just upper management and owners profits are sharing in the windfall.

Well, if you want to read one of the more inane and fruitless discussions that actually manages to come up with a close to plausible conclusion, follow the link.

Why is the price of oil so high?
Supply, demand, decline of dollar among the factors
The Journal-Constitution recently separately spoke with an expert in the workings of investments and another expert on the geology of fossil fuels
Fisher: Absolutely nobody knows what is going to happen to oil prices. There are so many dependencies out there.

When gasoline prices first hit $2 a gallon three years ago, drivers gritted their teeth and kept on pumping in the hope that the damage would be temporary.

Now, prices have doubled and the distress shows no sign of disappearing.

It's all a matter of degree. I would not expect prices to fall back to the levels of a year ago. I don't expect them to fall sharply.

Unless there comes to be a lot more supply or a lot more conservation — especially in the United States — I just don't see the supply-demand balance improving back to the "good old days" of $60-a-barrel oil.

AREN'T WE ALL MULTI-RACIAL?

clipped from www.cnn.com

Behind the Scenes: Is Barack Obama black or biracial?

By Jason Carroll
CNN's American Morning

Included in the multiracial category is the Democratic presumptive nominee, Sen. Barack Obama. With a white mother from Kansas and a black father from Kenya, Obama is the nation's first biracial candidate for president. The media, however, have continually called Obama the nation's first major party "black candidate," saying he could make history as the first "black president." But is that accurate?

A columnist examining Obama's background summed up his racial identity into one equation: white + black = black.

The 2000 U.S. Census was the first time Americans were allowed to identify themselves as "multiracial," and more than six million people checked more than one box in the race and ethnicity category.

FYI - Now We Know Whose Economy Is Being Stimulated

As a tax professional, I field numerous questions about the Economic Stimulus rebate; even though there is only a tenuous relationship between taxes and the stimulus payments.

Well here's some info for those of you who were concerned about that "stimulus".
clipped from www.ajc.com

So far, at least part of 16,000 stimulus payments to Georgians have been intercepted by the state because the recipients owe back state taxes.

State seizing federal stimulus checks for back taxes
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Thousands of Georgians who owe back state income taxes are seeing their federal stimulus checks go back to the government.

In all, the state has collected $4.66 million worth of federal stimulus money from Georgians owing back taxes through the end of May. That's second only to the state of New York, which has collected $4.71 million in back taxes from the stimulus payouts
